Ten Hag praises De Gea as the ‘complete goalkeeper’ as Man Utd push to reduce his wages on new deal

ERIK TEN HAG has hailed No 1 David de Gea as the “complete goalkeeper” despite his Manchester United contract stand-off.

The Red Devils boss is determined the club reach an agreement with the Spanish shot stopper to keep him beyond this season.

De Gea, 32, has been at Old Trafford for 12 years after joining from Atletico Madrid.

His current contract runs out this summer and United want to reduce his wages from £375,000 a week to £200,000 but the player is refusing to sign.

Ahead of United’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Sevilla on Thursday night, Ten Hag said: “David is a really multi-functional and complete goalkeeper. We are very happy with him.’’

The Dutchman also highlighted how important De Gea is amid the keeper’s uncertain future and question marks over his distribution.

He said: “Everyone has their own particular style and nowadays in possession, it becomes more important, especially at the top level.

“There you take control and it is more difficult for the opponent to gain pressure, you also concede less chances.

“But it’s about stopping goals, stopping  shots,  stopping  crosses, one-on-ones,  more like the classic goalkeeper.”

De Gea currently leads the Golden Glove race with 14 clean sheets in the Premier League and is set to face Sevilla.

United drew  the first leg 2-2 at Old Trafford.

Thirty-one goal striker Marcus Rashford will return tomorrow night after missing two games with a groin injury.

And the Old Trafford club could soon be flush with cash if Sheikh Jassim, who wants Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar, buys the club in a £5.5BILLION takeover. SunSport understands United stars are desperate for the Glazer family to sell up to end the negative atmosphere and boost their squad with world-class signings. United fans sang about signing Kane in their 2-2 draw at Spurs on Thursday — after their boss Ten Hag had called him “a great player and personality”. And now Ten Hag says:  “Everyone knows and it is not a secret that long-term and over a whole season we had a shortage of No9s. “We had the drop out of [Cristiano] Ronaldo, then Anthony Martial was often not available, Jadon Sancho often not available, then you have a shortage of front line players. “We have players who can play the role but definitely we need some offensive players who are impact and qual...

Crystal Palace planning huge summer transfer overhaul with Man Utd and Chelsea stars targeted and Zaha future in doubt...

CRYSTAL PALACE are preparing to spend big in the summer to reboot their long-term plan after sacking Patrick Vieira. Vieira had replaced Hodgson in 2021 as they looked to move to the new level, investing in a number of younger more attacking players. After a successful first season, including an FA Cup semi-final, Vieira failed to kick on in South London and Palace are preparing another push this summer. There have been tensions in the boardroom over the level of spending in recent windows, with some feeling more should have been done to help Vieira in January. However, there is a feeling everyone is close to being on the same page ahead of the summer. And while there is also a new manager to appoint, with Hodgson currently in the gig until the end of the season, a list of targets are being drawn up. The Eagles are keen to bring in new faces along the entire back four, to cover and compete with their existing options. Academy product Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who joined Manchester United in ...
